What are phthalates and where are they found?

Phthalates are chemicals added in tiny amounts to soften plastics and stabilize fragrances.  Some products that might contain phthalates are teething toys, rubber duckies, plastic wrap, cosmetics, vinyl (including vinyl flooring), perfumes, lotion, shampoo, and medical devices.  There are many different phthalates and they all have different properties.

CPSIA singles out six phthalates for special attention.  DEHP, DBP, and BBP have been banned.  The use of DINP, DIDP, and DnOP have been limited to concentrations no higher than 0.1%.

  • Phthalates are often found in silk screen inks also. That would include heat press transfers (think tagless neck tags as well) as well as traditional silk screen inks.
